Preparing for your first clinical placement is easier when you separate the things you can arrange in advance from the things your instructor will explain on the day. Start with your school's placement instructions and use a checklist to gather any unanswered questions.
The ANA describes nursing clinicals as supervised learning experiences, with expectations shaped by the program and setting. This guide covers personal preparation and administration. Your school and placement site determine clinical tasks, supervision and required records.
Confirm the arrival details
Write down the date, expected arrival time, meeting point and the contact method your school has provided. Check whether a building entrance, parking area or access route differs outside normal office hours.
Plan how you will get there and what you will do if transport is disrupted. Follow the school's instructions for absence or lateness. Save the relevant contact information somewhere you can reach without searching through an old email thread.
Put requirements in one checklist
Read the official instructions and record each requirement, its deadline and where it must be completed or submitted. Depending on the program, the instructions may cover access arrangements, required learning, identification, attire or documentation. Do not assume another student's list applies to you.
- What is required before the first day?
- Where do I check whether it has been accepted?
- Which documents or forms must I bring?
- Who should I ask about an incomplete or unclear item?
Use a status such as awaiting confirmation when you have submitted something but do not yet know it has been accepted.

Pack from the approved list
Use your school or site's uniform and supply requirements to prepare your bag. Avoid buying extra equipment before checking whether it is required or permitted. Keep personal supplies, travel arrangements and food planning on your own checklist so they do not compete with last-minute paperwork.
If you want to bring a personal worksheet, first confirm whether your setting allows it. An optional template does not replace a required school or facility form.
Choose one learning question
A manageable first-day question might be: Where do I find the placement objectives and how will feedback be recorded? Another could be: What should I prepare before each supervised learning day? These questions help you understand the learning process without setting your own clinical responsibilities.
Leave space for the instructor to explain the plan. You do not need to arrive with a self-written list of procedures to complete independently.
Prepare an end-of-day routine
After the placement, update your personal hours record using school rules, note assignment deadlines and capture one learning point without identifiable patient details. Transfer information into official systems when required.
The Clinical Rotation Organizer brings requirements, rotation dates, hours, skills experiences and feedback together in a reusable pack. For more on the distinction between time and learning records, read clinical hours logs versus skills trackers.
